11 PM - Kitchen Thread

[All characters have relocated to the kitchen where they've set envelopes on the table; characters were encouraged (but not required on any game-based level) to put anything besides their welcome message/map into the envelope. Fake outs, of course, allowed. Separate thread by requests since it's been about two months. If your character put anything in their envelope, a reminder that you can post an anonymous comment with the contents of an envelope here, just be sure to PM sheep_dog to let them know you did in case there's any questions. Once your character's made a reply we'll assume you've had a chance to leave any message. Feel free to leave your anonymous messages in or outside the thread.

Characters can put their vote-off post on the bulletin board after the kitchen thread, but due to OOC issues Haneoka had to be the one voted off the first round. We've confirmed enough characters will vote her off anyway but feel free to list whoever else you want. You can do that anonymously too if you prefer.]

We have a king, but there's not much more to him than the title. Shinigami don't care much for laws or rules. Maybe we did, at one time, but gambling and watching humans are all anyone has the energy for now. But... if someone were judging us here as criminals, I think any shinigami would qualify. After all, if we're alive now, we've inevitably killed humans. Even if a wolf only killed humans to survive, the humans would think of it as a murderer, wouldn't they?

Even ignoring that some of us haven't broken any laws, we choose who gets to leave. That's very kind for someone who feels we need to be punished for any wrong doings.

As for what to do while we're here, it looks like we still have all the sheets, as Ryuk should have Mikami-san's paper.

They have to be destroyed Atsushi-kun. I'm sure you'd burn through them all, but shredding and then destroying the pieces is the most sure way.

Gambling, was it, Ryuk-san? [Separately, as the others talk of who gets to blaze what.] It does seem that Shinigami do honor a certain type of order. You justified an earlier statement by deciding it was a matter of fairness.

Or are you uniquely virtuous?

[As L worked on engaging the Shinigami in conversation, Light would begin to gather the envelopes to extract the notes. His eyes, however, moved between the job and Ryuk as if he too were waiting on an answer.]

I wouldn't call it "virtue". It's just fair play. What's more entertaining? Watching a cat catch and eat a mouse? Or watching a mouse turn the tables on a cat? The big eat the small. The powerful oppress the weak. That's the ordinary order of business. It's those exceptions that are fair sport. [For a rare moment of self-criticality, he tilts his head.] Why d'you bring it up?

Is that your view? Or is that the Shinigami Kingdom's view?

I've spoken to a few who feel the same way, but that's always been my opinion. Why?

Because you are in danger, Ryuk-san. Is it possible that your actions in search of entertainment have been seen as upsetting a perceived natural order?

I wonder... [Light would mumble and move closer to Ryuk. He should have Mikami's pages, after all. That was all that was left.] Where does a Death God fit into the natural order?

[This, for the first time, seems like an idea that concerns him to some extent. The shinigami sobers visibly, his speech a little more thoughtful.]

The only authority I can think of that we're accountable to is our king, and he's pretty hands-off. Shinigami aren't really held accountable to much. But... most don't really interact directly with humans.

Shinigami also do not normally end up trapped anywhere so outside of their comprehension. But are you saying that you have interacted with humans more than most even prior to this?

Nah. You're getting more shinigami interaction here than almost any humans who have ever lived. Well, that have known about it.

Then would you like to interact with me privately for a bit? While getting papers for us to vote for the one either most or least likely to be guilty. [L motions from his kitchen perch all the way out across the main room where the bulletin board is.]

Nobody stands out as specifically likely to be guilty of an uncommitted crime. In the first place, if one of us is a murderer, sending that person away to safety rather than administering justice would be a problem. Sending the most innocent home would be best... If we're even trusting that that's what happens in playing along with this.

I agree with Mikami-san, though I would also like to add that there's yet to be a crime to be guilty of. Any evidence would be circumstantial.

Though, before you steal Ryuk away...[His eyes went to the Shinigami.] Would you mind handing over the papers Mikami-san gave you for safe keeping so they can also be destroyed?

Huh... Sure, I guess. Lead the way, human.

Ah. [He almost hands it over, but quickly thinks better of it - at least for whatever degree it still matters, setting it down.] Almost forgot.

There isn't any reason to make a copy. I'd scanned mine to show you and you did the same. It can be printed from the computer in the office.
