11 PM - Kitchen Thread

[All characters have relocated to the kitchen where they've set envelopes on the table; characters were encouraged (but not required on any game-based level) to put anything besides their welcome message/map into the envelope. Fake outs, of course, allowed. Separate thread by requests since it's been about two months. If your character put anything in their envelope, a reminder that you can post an anonymous comment with the contents of an envelope here, just be sure to PM sheep_dog to let them know you did in case there's any questions. Once your character's made a reply we'll assume you've had a chance to leave any message. Feel free to leave your anonymous messages in or outside the thread.

Characters can put their vote-off post on the bulletin board after the kitchen thread, but due to OOC issues Haneoka had to be the one voted off the first round. We've confirmed enough characters will vote her off anyway but feel free to list whoever else you want. You can do that anonymously too if you prefer.]

[L starts to turn to the pantry then stops.]

Shinigami, if he touches anything while I'm gathering materials, would you please tell me?

[That subtle tonal shift evokes a more affable grin on Ryuk's face.]

Why would I want to touch anything? [In case it weren't abnundantly clear that it's a rhetorical question, Mikami mumbles to himself while pulling the kettle off of the burner.] If my fingerprints are on anything but that last envelope, it'd be obvious I interfered with an ongoing investigation...

[L smiles. Unlike Ryuk, he apparently enjoys Mikami's perpetual bitchiness.]

[Then it's off to the pantry to begin gathering cooking oil and paper towels. It's only a few seconds as he seems to already know exactly where they are in the pantry. He takes two long cups, a tea cup, and two bowls and sets them on the counter as well. Once gathered he perches in a chair again, setting things up.]

Unfortunately I did not see apples. But things will become interesting shortly, so please bare with us until then.

I think I can do without them if things are about to get interesting.

Speaking of interesting... [Since Mikami so rudely took his kettle he'll just start putting sugar in an empty cup.] Is there a reason that Shinigami write human names on Death Notes?

It's to extend our own lifespans. Maybe for fun, for some, I guess. But when a human's name is written in a Death Note, their remaining natural lifespan is added to the shinigami's. We don't need to do it very often.

Isn't it dangerous not to do so regularly?

You can do a few at a time and be set for a few hundred years. The only danger is losing track.

Then there's a way to keep track, to know each human's remaining lifespan.

Observant. Yeah. That's right.

Hmmm... [Once the cup is half full of sugar he lulls his head back and forth, chin on his knees.] Then can you say who is going to die tonight?

Normally, yes, I could. But there's a little wrinkle to things in this place.

[One long, tapered finger indicates L.]

Going by what I know of lifespans, you should already be dead.

[He blinks. Which is a normal thing normal folk do, but some might have been under the impression that L doesn't.]

And what do you know of lifespans to suggest that?

[It's been long enough the bottom of the kettle should be moderately cooled, at least enough to smearing soot from the bottom of the tea kettle on one of the paper towels. There's not a lot, but it's enough to get onto his fingers after putting the kettle back on the burner.

With a serious expression, as if there's not a god of death and, according to Ryuk, a zombie chatting about the impending murder of kidnapping victims, he goes about pressing his fingers down to give inked impressions.]

You don't seem to have one. There's nothing there. Blank.

[He takes the kettle and pours it into the cup of sugar.]

"Blank?" So it's something you see.

[Stir. Stir. Stir.]

Where?

[inthecolosseum]

Over the head.

[He cracks a small grin.] No, I won't be sharing exactly what the lifespans I can see are.

[takethecake]

[L stops stirring and looks up. His eyes cross briefly before looking to Ryuk.]

Is anybody else here "dead"?

[inthecolosseum]

[He seems briefly contemplative.]

I guess since I just shared it with him in here, it's fair to let you know he is.

[Those yellow, inhuman eyes fix on Mikami.]

And no, I don't know why or how. [A thin, sharp-toothed grin spreads across his face.] But at least you're on equal footing now.

[It takes him a few moments to realize that he's talking about him, despite being the only one in the room. Even while Ryuk's eyes are one of the few parts of that thing's face that can move, the significance isn't immediate. Even once he gets it, it seems to strike him as too ridiculous to take seriously and so he waits for the punchline.]




[It's not coming, is it?]

This is your attempt to throw things into even greater chaos. What's "equal" about this? Unless you mean to say that that note, [He gestures to the collected envelopes, the four opened and the one yet unopened.] has some merit to it and that we're immune to death by Death Note.

[Ryuk tilts his head thoughtfully at this, if to a somewhat unnatural degree.]

I wonder if that could be? If you're already dead - if that's what this means - then maybe you are. That would make things easier, wouldn't it?

What about the others? Do things look normal on the rest of them? [Mikami vaguely swishes a hand above his head where he assumes whatever should be there would be.]

Everyone else is just as I'm used to. You two are the only abnormalities here.

[He's blank-faced and quiet for a little too long to be completely certain the irony is accidental, but then again, that's how his face is.]

[He moves to pinch the bridge of his nose before noting he still has soot on his fingers and moving to wash his hands.] I'm going to take that in context.

To be clear, even if a person is on death row, set to die, lying on the ground bleeding out, their lifespan would be visible until their actual, biological death? As long as there are so much as a few seconds that you could theoretically take from them.
