11 PM - Kitchen Thread

[All characters have relocated to the kitchen where they've set envelopes on the table; characters were encouraged (but not required on any game-based level) to put anything besides their welcome message/map into the envelope. Fake outs, of course, allowed. Separate thread by requests since it's been about two months. If your character put anything in their envelope, a reminder that you can post an anonymous comment with the contents of an envelope here, just be sure to PM sheep_dog to let them know you did in case there's any questions. Once your character's made a reply we'll assume you've had a chance to leave any message. Feel free to leave your anonymous messages in or outside the thread.

Characters can put their vote-off post on the bulletin board after the kitchen thread, but due to OOC issues Haneoka had to be the one voted off the first round. We've confirmed enough characters will vote her off anyway but feel free to list whoever else you want. You can do that anonymously too if you prefer.]

[Other than a sidelong glance in his direction to make it clear he did hear that, Mikami otherwise pretends he did not, returning his attention to Ryuk both regarding the question he was asked and in terms of the next envelope.]

[The shinigami seems perhaps just the tiniest bit offput by being grilled so directly, drawing his height up a bit more upright, though he replies smugly as he cuts the envelope with his fingernail like a letter opener to reveal its contents.]

The human whose name is written in a Death Note will die. The user must picture the specific target's name, and face. Once this is done, the user has 40 seconds to write the cause of death. If no cause is provided, or the cause of death isn't possible, they will die by heart attack. There's a six minute, forty second deadline for writing details after this if it's provided. And yes, this means the target can be controlled, to some extent. They can't do anything that's impossible for them, though.

((Since the contents of each envelope have been fairly generic, I think we can assume he continues to cut the rest of them open without much fanfare or prelude.))

[As Light listens, a smile comes in his face.]

Then it's true. Ryuk, once this part is over, I'd like to speak with you. It's not related to the current case, but you may have done a lot to help solve one I'm working on back home.

[His eyes went to each of them before landing on L.] Now isn't the best time to talk about it. Ryuk, if you would continue.

Yes, the one we're working on together. It can still wait until we're not in a group of other people working on a more current problem.

But to think that Yagami-san is so fond of me as to want to spend the rest of his life with me...

We've spent enough time together now that I'd like to think of us as friends, and I do hope to work with you in the future, but to say we planned to spend the rest of our lives together would be overdoing it a bit.

[He opens his mouth to continue but Atsushi is more successful at shutting him up than Light.]

Come too? Atsushi-kun, we've not made any plans to go anywhere. [He looks at Atsushi, wondering if he should have him sit until he's sobered up. Deciding he seemed fine, if a bit too happy, his eyes went back to L.]

As for what this knowledge means, I don't mind telling you, but not here. We keep getting distracted from the goal at hand.

[Ignoring how much everyone decidedly wants a piece of Light, Mikami continues to watch the openings.] I think at this point we can see that nothing is going to turn up. [Which is to say assume any time now that they're opening that fourth envelope with the different message. Briefly, he finally looks away from the envelopes and Ryuk to the others with a touch of open annoyance.] I don't know about what you were doing before coming here, but Yagami-san must not have known about the Death Note in advance. He's been forthcoming with his name. The same should be said of myself, Astushi [You get no honorific, you punk.] and Haneoka-san.

[Not wanting to put a stop to delicious cattiness, Ryuk opens the fourth envelope in silence, though he tilts his head when he notices it's a bit different, waiting until Mikami is done before wordlessly holding out its contents.]

[Light would accept the contents, frowning before even beginning to read.]

This is different from the rest, but the starting note isn't the original. [His eyes scanned the group.] Someone still has their paper.

Heh heh heh heh.... Interesting.

That does support the idea that there's a killer among us if somebody is going out of their way to hold onto an untraceable weapon. The only one it would be impossible for it to be would be Atsushi's.

[Mikami looks straight at L.]

[If he notices, he doesn't bother responding, eyeing the paper the best he can without having it in hand.]

[Light would pass it over after giving it a read himself. He holds it out for a few seconds, expecting L to take it the same way he seems to hold everything else.]

It might even mean something worse: if this wasn't the intended killing method, there might be two people willing to kill.

Hey, lemme hold dat too. [Says Atsushi, stretching out a hand while holding a lighter and a baggie of suspicious dried herbs in the other. His last blunt enjoyment had been interrupted, perhaps this time they'd let him blaze in peace.]

[Light would reach out, an open hand going to his wrist to try to urge the hand down.]

It's evidence for now, Atsushi-kun. [Also, please no smoking illegal substances.]

[He makes sure he's in a position to carefully watch every expression in the room before speaking, willing to amble or shift absently beforehand.]

It may not be impossible to lift fingerprints from the papers and envelopes here.

I don't have a mild surprise icon...

Mm. Since they're very recent, it may be possible even if we have to use physical methods instead of chemical or vapor ones. Even if they aren't precise, comparisons can be made by having each of us handle a test paper to compare the prints. There's likely to be graphite pencil lead someplace...


[MOD NOTE: If you need specific chemicals, feel free to PM me what common household object or chemical you need and I'll decide if it's reasonable to find it in the setting. Stuff made specifically for the task like ninhydrin's a stretch, but iodine might be in something; Google's suggesting you'd get pretty crappy, watered down stuff from what I'd normally expect to find in a household, but I'll take your cases as they come.

If your character's handled any paper in a way to avoid leaving fingerprints, be sure to send a note to sheep_dog and make a case for why your character did so or anticipated potential fingerprinting. They'll get back to you if it doesn't fly. Otherwise, if the one leaving the note could leave an anonymous post on what finger prints are on the paper, aside from any who've touched it after the fact, when/if we get to that point, please and thank you.]
